Congratulations to four deserving award recipients from the Carpentry Framing and Forming Foundation program: Azenith Alforque, Keenan Piller, Matthew Anderson, and Ryan Chapman. Each student was presented a $1,000 scholarship at the Greater Vancouver Home Builders Association (GVHBA) Annual General Meeting on April 1, 2015.

The Greater Vancouver Home Builders Association (GVHBA) is a great supporter of the training done at BCIT and has provided recognition and support through bursaries to our students since 1998. Funding for the scholarships was raised from the annual GVHBA Fall Classic Golf Tournament.

JULY 21, 2015 -  The Georgie Awards®, operated and hosted by the Canadian Home Builders' Association of BC, are recognized both provincially and nationally as the residential construction industry's most prestigious awards program. The annual Awards honour outstanding excellence in all areas of building including planning, design and construction, renovation, marketing, innovation, special achievement and more. 
 
Entering the Awards provides a tremendous opportunity to showcase projects, innovative designs and the high standard of quality that conveys a company's level of commitment and professionalism to customers while gaining valuable exposure. 
 
New to the Georgie Awards Program:
To better identify the Finalists and Winners of the Georgie Awards® , starting this year we will identify the annual program by the year in which the winners are announced.
 
example: 2016 Georgie Awards®  Finalist, 2016 Georgie Awards®  Winner. 
 
Although this may create some confusion in this change-over year, we believe that it will be better overall for your marketing purposes. These awards reflect eligible projects for the period of January 1, 2014 to September 30, 2015.
 
Eligibility  
The Georgie Awards® are open to all members of the Canadian Home Builders' Association of BC including members from its 9 local affiliated home builder associations located throughout all regions of British Columbia. Members are encouraged to enter regardless of the size of their company or project.
 
Projects and products built, renovated, developed, created and/or marketed for the period of January 1, 2014 - September 30, 2015 are eligible for entry. Winners will be announced at the 24th  Annual Georgie Awards® Gala on Friday, March 11, 2016, at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver with more than 500 industry professionals, senior government officials and media in attendance.

CHBA BC has refined the categories and made some improvements to the process for entering including: 
•One site to upload all images for your entries
•Elimination of the mandatory requirement to enroll in the AVID Ratings system for the Grand Georgie categories with the exception of the Customer Satisfaction Award
•Integration of the previous sustainable awards programs into the Georgie Awards® by adding three categories specifically for ENERGY STAR, Built Green® & R-2000 homes
•Created a new easy, online registration and submission process

Editorial: Will (and Should) Ottawa Try to Cool Canada’s Hot Housing Market?

Speculation is mounting that the federal government is moments away from taking a radical step in an attempt to cool off Canada’s scorching hot real estate market. According to the Financial Post’s sources, the feds have been studying proposals to increase the minimum down payment from its current 5 per cent. They are also reportedly looking at additional (as yet unspecified) restrictions for high-priced real estate to try to dampen the higher-end home frenzy in Vancouver and Toronto.

With interest rates falling even further than their already historic lows last week, which if anything is likely to further increase sales and prices, the possibility is becoming even more likely that Ottawa will take action.

“They are definitely looking into this but it doesn’t mean that they will do it,” one source told the Financial Post. Another source confirmed that Ottawa is continuing to look at increasing the minimum down payment.

The question is, would such a move actually succeed in guiding Canada’s real estate market into the feather-soft landing that many hope for and believe is necessary? The answer is, probably not.

Vancouver homebuilders president disappointed by transit tax rejection

“Disappointing.” That’s the word from the head of the Greater Vancouver Home Builders Association (GVHBA) following a referendum ballot aimed at pumping $7.5 billion over ten years into Metro Vancouver’s congested transportation system.

Instead, the 61.7 percent of 700,000 voters who said No to a 0.5 per cent sales tax only made the daily grind for contractors working across Metro’s 21 municipalities tougher, according to GVHBA President Bob de Wit.

NightShift is undergoing an expantion and renovation, and they need your help! They'd appreciate any items as well as help with installation and removals.
 
Their wish list:
 
•       High-traffic commercial vinyl for training and warehouse area flooring
•       Outdoor roll shutters. Help prevent glass breakage 
•       Outdoor signage (remove Sisters and replace with NightShift)
•       Audio/visual installation
•       Satellite radio and wiring new speakers at admin/reception, as well as additional outdoor speakers
•       Replace our sliding cooler, used nightly by our food prep teams (must be restaurant quality)
•       Design, donate and install a commercial kitchen, with a new 6 burns gas stove
•       Need a new commercial faucet with sprayer on a retractable line to clean cooking pots
•       Need a new Bunn coffee maker with warmer on top and a hot water tap (or a commercial coffee maker for 100+ cups          of coffee)
•       Commercial grade storage solution for travel-size toiletry items that we give out every night of the year (e.g. roll-out          cubbies)
•       And in the long-run, we’re looking to partner with a company to help us replace our limping, 11-year old mobile                  kitchen.

NightShift Street Ministries, a not-for-profit, multi-denominational Christian organization that began helping the poor on King George Highway in the middle of a blistery snowstorm is expanding and ‘shifting’.
 
What started in a makeshift emergency overnight shelter in an unpretentious street church in 2004 has grown into a noteworthy operation offering nightly outreach, counselling, education and transitional housing. The Care Centre, which provides counselling and oversees a mobile Care Bus also offering nursing and library services, as well as two social enterprises, Ragtime clothing bins and Sisters Thrift Boutique, round out its operations on King George Boulevard.
 
The organization’s thrift store, www.SistersThriftBoutique.com is moving from Whalley to a new location in Guildford and opens on August 1st at 14888 104 Avenue. 
 
Major expansion renovations start this week at the organization’s headquarters on 10635 King George Blvd to carve out much-needed space for additional counselling and administration offices, warehousing, and a new daytime training area, where we will continue to expand our programs for youth, young adults, women suffering abuse, mothers and tots, including our Art Classes, Alpha, and a new, expanded volunteer training program.
 
The MINGA project (Investors Group, Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association members, Benchmark Homes, Centra Windows and Exclusive Floors) head up the renovations and support for this cause.
 
Painters, electricians, plumbers and other volunteers are urgently needed to help us with window coverings, lighting, flooring, audiovisual equipment, storage shelving, lockers and a sliding cooler!

While past seminars have looked into the details of specific changes, Building Smart #22 will bring together all of recent Building Code changes required in the construction of homes in British Columbia.
