• New VBBL requirements for accessibility, energy and sustainability, and
• Examples of building solutions that comply with the new requirements.

The Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association (GVHBA) has launched its 17th annual Coats for Kids campaign in support of the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau, a group whose outreach helps to provide a brighter Christmas for families in need.
 
In addition to the GVHBA office, 38 member companies at 64 locations in 14 municipalities will serve as coat drop-off sites from November 19 to December 7.
 
“Last year the response to Coats for Kids was heartwarming as Lower Mainland residents donated more than 3,000 coats, scarves, gloves, blankets and new unwrapped toys and gifts for distribution to children, teenagers and adults,” said GVHBA Chair Blake Hudema.
 
“I am delighted so many members of our association are participating in this annual initiative,” said Hudema.

The Canadian Home Builders' Association of British Columbia (CHBA BC) is pleased to announce this year's Georgie Awards® finalists, whose new home and home renovation projects highlight just some of the quality, skill, professionalism and excellence in B.C.'s residential construction industry.

Presented by CHBA BC and BC Homes, the Georgie Awards® showcase the best and brightest of B.C.'s residential construction industry, whether home builder, renovator, marketer, sales representative or otherwise involved in the industry. Now celebrating their 21st year, the Georgie Awards® are nationally known for recognizing and rewarding excellence and innovation in British Columbia's home building and renovation community.

This year's awards raked in more than 500 entries that feature amazing, brand-new homes and breathtaking home renovations throughout B.C. in a total of 45 categories, showcasing the culture of imagination and ingenuity that just grows stronger in B.C.'s industry each year.

The awards cover projects and products built, renovated, developed, created and/or marketed for the period of January 1, 2011 - July 31 2012. An esteemed judging panel from outside B.C. recently judged all Georgie Awards® entries in an intensive three-day event.

Following a comprehensive review of fee structures throughout 2012 and 2013, new electrical and elevating devices fee schedules will be in effect beginning April 15, 2013. The intent of the fee structure changes was to simplify and clarify the fees and to more closely match them with risk and effort to assess the installations.

After reviewing all responses received through consultation, the major changes to electrical fees, effective April 15, 2013, will be:

• Standardised charges for operating permits
• Residential single family installation permit fees are now service-based instead of job value-based
• Simplified contractor installation permits. The fixed fees per band have been set to closely align to today’s average fees paid in each band.

The major changes to elevating devices fees, effective April 15, 2013 will be:

• Clarity and certainty in pricing
• Design registration split into two categories with fixed fees associated with complexity of assessment work
• Consolidation and alignment of fees
• Multiple elevating devices categories merged and operating permits aligned with installation permits (number of floors)
• Encouraged inclusion in the safety system by lowering fees for elevators for persons with physical disabilities for two years
• Re-aligned licence and certification categories including new fees for Elevator Mechanic Certification
• Simplified and clarified scope of each permit type
• New category for Private Access Elevator (statutory right of way).

The new electrical and elevating devices fee schedules will be in effect on April 15, 2013. These fee structure changes are within the overall 3% increase already in place for 2013, and are not intended to add additional revenue for the BC Safety Authority.
